Quiet yet intense
The movie moves at a slow and delicate pace, but for some reason the story carries you through to the end rather quickly. There were several scenes that make you almost feel the emotion of the characters. I found myself feeling frustrated, loved, conflicted etc. as I watched the actors in this movie. Benedict Cumberbatch is, of course, fantastic in this movie and I thought Claire Foy's acting was fantastic and very appropriate for the feel of the story. I'm no professional movie critic, but I do appreciate when a story exposes me to a range of circumstances I'm not totally comfortable with and helps me to empathize and even understand them.
I recommend this movie to anyone that likes independent film and modern drama.
Bought it for Benedict...
I originally bought this movie for my celebrity crush Benedict Cumberbatch. It is a highly disturbing meditation on small town interactions with a lot to chew on. I didn't think I'd watch it more than once, but I had questions about the storyline so I watched it a second time. No doubt I will watch it a third time as well. There is a lot of subtlety in this movie and much to absorb. I recommend finding the interview with the writer/director as well. Her insights on the genesis of this movie make it even more interesting. This is not an "easy" movie for many reasons, but if you like excellent acting and a story which lingers forever in ethical shades of grey, you will find this a gem.
Very realistic characters
Some reviews have said that this movie was slow moving and choppy. I found neither of these things to be true. I thought that this was a very well done movie about the complexities of relationships and life and how those relationships are strained and changed when someone from the past comes back into their lives. I thought that each of the main characters were wonderfully portrayed as real people with their quirks, insecurities and fears.
Though one review said that this is a portrait of small town life, I prefer to think that this is life within groups of friends. We have all known people in our circle of friends and acquaintances who have been unfaithful to their partners with some else in that same circle. It isn't right, but in today's world it seems to be much more common.
What really shined through for me was the love between the brothers, the love between the main couple and the sacrifices each person made in their search for happiness.
That being said, it was...
